Poetry poetry poetry Ode to Sister Amy and Elegy for Chris Bursk - Jimmy Carter w Rosalyn at his inauguration in 1968

ODE TO AMY

Look at you, the Ame,
Keeping your Greenwold name
And living the life you want,
beautiful Girl, with quilting fingers.
Far from the watchful eyes
Of your oft-fighting sisters
Good God! Won't we ever learn?

You won, Amy! Kids and boyfriends
and sweet cups of coffee as you
look out the high window at the waves
of heat that will never swallow you up
in Tacoma.

May I join you in a cup of Joe
Here on my Red Couch where I survey
the neighborhood
Robins bathe in the bird bath
We all must keep cool
Until the Polar Bears
Turn white again.

ELEGY FOR CHRIS BURSK

In formal dress

they waited for him to appear

yes, tails and ties

Joe Cocker

Leroi Jones

Melville

Emily, her hair shorn

Langston and sad-faced Baldwin

Maya, fluttering like a bird

Back yard trees of every variety

Orange Daylilies by the side of the road

Slobbering Irish Setters

A flock of moaning border collies

Edna Saint Vincent Millet spreading out her diaphanous skirt

The Buddha with elephant ears

Whitman Chocolates

And a Music Box from Aunt Hy playing Goldberg Variations.

As head of my people, the mentally ill, I should find out again how the Carters got involved in Mental Health.  How lucky that tomorrow is another day. Quoth the Stevie Ray Vaughn.
