- Syd Carpenter was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1953 and earned an MFA from Tyler School of Art. Over the course of her career, she has been a guest artist at Anderson Ranch, Haystack Mountain School, Penland School, Chicago Art Institute, Hollins University, Dickinson College, Millersville University, Howard University, and the University of Delaware, among others.

SARAH BROWN EYES
She lived with me
only a while, this child
I bore at Bohne Hospital
in Texas where wildflowers
red, blue, and purple sprouted
along the legendary highways
of this oddly-shaped state.
She absorbed everything she could:
from me, her little brother Dan,
from Abington Friends,
from programs for smart kids
and we all remember her way
with food. She'd look in the fridge
and come up with a three-course meal.
Loved by all, her many cousins
nieces and nephews, former paramours,
we wondered: Who will she choose
for the ball.
