POEM FOR CICELY TYSON

They be weeping and moaning under the Full Moon tonight in the Carib island of Nevis where she were born.

After Daddy went away, she were raised by a strict and miserable woman who stomped on her soul.

Waiting with the patience of Job, movies became her partner. She dressed with elegance, long formal
gloves, furs to wrap round her lithesome body, and all them films so many so many, Miss Jane Pittman,
Sounder, The Gin Game, a play with full bellied James Earl Jones - his boom of a voice, her voice a pianissimo, a delicate orchid in a hot house.

We weep as never before. What's that you said in an interview?

Struggle - Pride - and Dignity.

You claimed our world.
