A FOURTH OF JULY POEM FOR
NEW DIRECTIONS SUPPORT GROUP
As long as one member suffers
we cannot rest
What a great meeting we had
the other night
Gathered in our huge church
men and women of all faiths
Proclaimed our solidarity
with one another
A rainbow hue of colors
of families large and small
Of jailbirds, former drug addicts
and the elderly, tottering
on swollen feet.
Unity is everything
How, I asked, have you resisted
the temptation to do away with
yourselves?
Not easy. Our love for one another
sustains us, like a blanket
of waving green leaves.
Fireworks later tonight
will remind us of Creation
That the creator loves
each and every one of us
Suffering is tolerated
in this crazy-quilt world
We shall sing Beethoven's
Ode to Joy
and sip a cup of coffee
when the stars align
in the Heavens and
mercy and kindness
are granted.
