RUTH: A TWO-ACT PLAY

The play opened on an April Sunday Afternoon,
in a small Willow Grove theater
the stage set, resembling
a brightly designed suburban house
in the early part of the 21rst century
the heroine, a 66 year old Renaissance woman
celebrating her re-birth and renewal
through a kidney transplant
donated by her 38 year old daughter,
her lithe figure contributed to boxing
our heroine praised as well
by a numerous dramatis personae:
including four generations of her immediate family:
all possessing Ruth's swarthy and fine brows
her mother, her sisters, her children
nieces and nephews, their own healthy issue
and her first grand daughter,
aptly named Grace
this play's cast also included:
numerous friends and fellow players
in Ruth's performance
their lines well rehearsed for many years
expertly ad-libbed and researched
some came early for their parts
others came late
yet better than never
this performance's climax came
when the boxer daughter gave a toast
declaring her mother's good fortune
Ruth the heroine spoke
of her new kidney,
naming it Odyessus
after returning it to fit at her side
During the climax,
The Greek chorus of Ruth's sister
and a personal friend
spoke of a Jazz Age bard's remark
that life had no second acts
Whereas the Sister
and the poet friend gesticulated
that God gave Ruth
Her rare second act.
