Lunch at the Giant Cafe - Poem: A Day in Late February

Nearly finished the Compass last night. Went to bed at a decent time. My evening beverage?

Martha, in our writing group, gave it to me as a b'day gift. The only thing I don't like is the packaging. Blue is a depressing color. Don't you think their marketing department should know dat?

Speaking of mark'g depts, had lunch today at the Giant Cafe.

I could NOT STAND being home one more minute.

How bout dat howling wind last nite? Hold on to the door of your car!

I'm eating a new product the Giant has just introduced.

A cheeseburger.

Click here for Tyson's website headquartered in Arkansas.

American's largest seller of meat, chicken and pork products.

Bet they don't tell what terrible things they have done.

In fact, after I paid for it, I did remember the name Tyson, but I HAD FAITH in my supermarket.

How do you spell  F O O L !

As I was eating, two women from our Giant meeting came down into the cafe.

So I didn't have lunch alone. I was dying to talk to someone other than saying hello to the folks who work there.

Janis and Eve joined me.

Janis loves her psychiatrist Kenneth Nelson. Sarah went to school with his violinist daughter Maureen Nelson who's a founding member of the Enso Quartet.

She just had a baby, whose pic Janis sees in Nelson's office.

Bet Maureen didn't eat Tyson Cheeseburgers while she was pregnant.

You know what I ate when I was pregnant? I had a fetish for Heartland Cereal, not available up north, but it's Granola with Texas fullfat milk, since Sarah was born in Brenham, TX.

What a healthy kid she turned out to be. Don't mess with Sarah, a former boxer, who's married to a piano player. She'll knock you out and Ethan will play Don't Mess with my Daughter.

Tuesday nite I went to the Upper Moreland Historical Association in the Township Building to hear a lecture about the impeachment hearings of the new president Andrew Johnson, who was the VP after Lincoln was assassinated.

He was an incorrigible drunk but was prosecuted on the grounds of treason. One vote freed him. He paid mightily to bribe the man.

As I sat there listening - it was quite interesting, tho I did wonder where my fave guy, Joe somebody, was. Haven't seen him in a long time. When I email him, he answers all my Local History Questions.

Sitting there, I was thinking about why I fell going up the steps to the building.

True, it was raining outside and the steps were wet.

The steps were also LARGER than those I'm used to.

The main reason I fell was Greed.

As in divorces, most of the grounds for divorce are sex, money, lack of communication.

My Greed was b/c I wanted to 'beat' the man I had just walked past and get into the room before he did.

You FOOOL You!

You MUST read "The Sixth Extinction."

It's a sin what we're doing to our planet, which almost extinguished itself during the dinosaur era. I read it while riding on my bike.

Just talked to my fab friend Tree and we exchanged names of great books.

My very cheerful windowsill.

And now, if you'll excuse me, gotta work on The Compass.

Everything I write is reviewed by someone.

Just got a good review for one of the most difficult sections: The Editor's Corner.

A DAY IN LATE FEBRUARY

Today I make my debut
in Hatboro town, vanilla
ice cream mounds of snow
kept me away. I looked
out the window - cardinals
and blue jays and wrens - and
sighed.

The radio heralded my long-
awaited appearance. Could've
been Beethoven's Eroica or
The Wedding March we heard last
night on Downton Abbey.

The proprietors came out to
greet me. Mark Amos and
faithful Bev from the
print shop, Danielle with
the long nails from the post
office. A man bowed and

held the door open
at the Wawa as I glided in,
gift card in hand. Knew what
brew I wanted, but tested
their Cuban Roast, shockingly
without taste

Filled my tall cup with
fragrant French Vanilla. Free
of charge - imagine!- Thanks
to a friend named Teresa.

Sipping it here at home on
the red couch, screen door
whirling in breaths of air
from birds and squirrels and
neighbors on this friendly
street, what more can I
want out of life.

Simply three things will do it.
Three Thin Mints.

Ever eaten Turkish Food? Delicious - Walk in the Pennypack - Poem: The Convert

Injected 10 units in the car and then walked in to the very crowded Willow Grove Bible Church. It was
lunchtime. I finished up some work for the Compass and then drove over. Perfect timing. I wanted to pay for my meal, but they wouldn't hear of it. Thank God!

I had seconds. The food was absy scrumptious. The yogurt that covered everything was made with dill and mint and other things, I thought I heard white-haired Lori say.

I was instructed on how to eat everything.

Many of the church folk are ministers, proselytizing for Jesus Christ Our Savior. As a Jew born 70 yo on Xmas Day I've always loved Jesus.

Image result for little golden book on jesus  When I was little and we were possibly at Heinen's Grocery Store in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, I asked mom if she'd buy me the above book.

To my surprise she said Yes.

Our relationship was cemented.

People changed chairs and tables like musical chairs. The nice thing is that if you're sitting alone, someone comes and sits with you.

Burt Plaster is trying to convert me to become a Christian. He would ask me to read passages in The New Testament and ask me to explain them.

It was sort like College Bowl with Allan Ludden.  I really enjoyed giving him my ad hoc interpretation of the lines.

He prayed for me out loud and then I prayed out loud too. When I finished he said I was filled with gratitude.

Told him that when I worked as a psychotherapist at Bristol-Bensalem Human Services - hello Judy Diaz, Greg Perri, Pam London Barrett, Linda Cleighton - I'd explore the neighborhood on my lunch hour.

I'd go to the Mercury Lounge and buy the best chili ever.

I also visited the crypt of Mother Katharine Drexel in Bensalem.

Oh, her Feast Day is coming up in March! Hmmm, I wonder what I could feast on.

More Girl Scout cookies?

Anyway I told Burt that when I walked into her shrine it was not inspiring at all, but I wandered into another room where no one was there. I saw a philodendron growing on a little shelf, behind which was a window with light filtering it.

Look! I have a fake philodendron in my bedroom atop my tall chest

Wait! Is it raining outside? Or is it God crying?

Now we're playing charades. Everyone wrote three words on a piece of folded paper. My words were Los Angeles, which I don't even know how to spell - cake - and matzoh.
Everyone who picked a piece of paper, Peter Piper, got 30 seconds to describe it to their team.

I picked Revelation - Book of the Bible, the last one - which they got - and two others I can't remember.

Round One was finished and I decided to go home. These people are smart and loving!

A missionary was in Turkey trying to convert Sunnis to Christianity. Some of the folks go to Kensington to convert folks.

Convert. What a word. Both verb and noun.

Scott will have our pizza ready at 6 pm, so I'm hurrying to finish this, plus I wanna write a poem. Something about conversion, I'd think.

Okay ready to go to the Pennypack?

The Director's house. It has a couple of additions on it.
Hard to see but there's lichen growing outa the tree trunk. Never knew lichen was a composite organism, did you?

And whom should we meet but the Director himself!

Why dyou wanna take a picture of me, asked David Robertson.

B/c I like you, I said.

Then we started talking about the Mickey Mouse Club, which he didn't watch, tho we both grew up in Cleveland.

Scott didn't watch either since he's 13 yrs younger, but he did watch reruns.

I remember a fantastic serial called Corky and White Shadow. I'd pretend I was Corky, played by Mouseketeer Darlene Gillespie.  White Shadow was her white German shepherd.

Later in life, I believe, Darlene got in trouble with the law and served time!

Okay, let's see if I'm right.

Thanks Jade for knitting me this lovely warm cap. I always wear sunglasses during the day.

Whenever I see this roof, I think it's a drive-in movie screen.
Up up up we go.

Brief pause while I go offstage to write a poem.

THE CONVERT

I will pray for you, he said, as I lay
half-dead in the hospital bed, my truck
having crashed into the railing, so
ashamed, I couldn'stop drinking
at the party. My Lily broke up with
me, was there with another man,
you know the rest of the story.

White casts held my wrist bones
together, my shattered knees,
and a bloody bandage soothed
my concussion. Oh, Lord, I
deserve to die, and hope I do.

Nurse Amy stopped in, put
my hand in hers and said,
Larry, you're going to
live, your vital signs are
strong, and you can think!
No cognitive, uh, brain loss
for you.

A man sat at my bed for quite
a while, I said, a bearded man
wearing stately purple robes,
do you know his name?

She laughed. Larry, no one
was here. No visitors allowed.
Don't worry about a thing. Your
cherry Jell-O is on the way.

The Last of the Girl Scout Cookies - Please vote for the 2016 Compass cover

THE LAST OF THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIES

Martin Luther King Jr declared Girl Scouts
a force for desegregation. Founder Juliette Gordon Low
in her khaki-colored ankle-length uniform wanted to give
girls the world over what she herself loved:
the sounds of birds winging by, forests with primeval
smells of earth and oak, making pine cone wreaths for
Christmas and a sense of "Self-reliance and resource-
fulness."

Foe of bigots, she wanted girls of every race and color.
Put on your backpacks and hike with me up this mountain trail
Feel your leg muscles stretch like a mountain lion. When we
get to the top, we will build our tent and eat outdoors in
the open air. Food never tasted so good.... kosher hot dogs
and Bush baked beans.

Sipping on her hot chocolate Juliette Gordon Low
looks down from the mountain at what her dream has
wrought. Two million girls and a Latina CEO. Dipping
a Thin Mint in her hot cup she hums the names of
Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, Shortbreads, Samoas
and thanks the Lord - well, her dear friend,
Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of The Boy Scouts.

My dear, he says to her as they sat 'neath a chestnut
tree before the blight, Please pass the thin mints. And a
glass of cold milk, s'il vous plais.

A little Epoxy Glue should seal up the tiny hole in the bird bath, said Tom Sanders,
He can live here rent-free.

I told the Writers Group today I got an email from Verizon saying they'll shut off my phone tomro, that is in 45 mins. I did pay my bill.

Be sure to read Terry Teachout's blog post about a new play that deals with racism.  He's the drama critic of The Wall Street Journal.

Which one of Carl's photos dyou like best for the Compass cover.

Sorry, the size is too large, but you can still figure it out.
